I’m looking forward to being a keynote speaker on the theme of “Sustainable Use of Marine Biodiversity” at the first Forum for the Ocean in Cancun, Mexico, next week, part of the 11th Festival of the Oceans of the Mexican Caribbean.

My essay on “Accelerating the SDGs through Investments in Marine Natural Capital” has been published as part of the official T20 compendium for India’s G20 presidency. The essay explores how investing in each of four marine ecosystems (coral reefs, mangroves, seagrass and seaweed) could accelerate the SDGs and harness the blue economy’s full potential.

This Saturday is Earth Day. To celebrate this occasion I will deliver the closing keynote on ocean sustainability at the 2023 Earth Day Symposium hosted by the World Business Angels Investment Forum (WBAF) Miami Office.

It’s Day 3 of Economist Impact’s World Ocean Summit! I interviewed Peggy Kalas, director of the High Seas Alliance, on protecting biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ). Negotiations for a treaty on BBNJ—or high seas treaty—began in 2018 and there is hope that there will be a breakthrough this year.

I spoke at the World Biodiversity Summit, a COP26 side event, in Glasgow. It is crucial not to neglect the role of biodiversity in the global climate conversations. Organised by the World Climate Foundation, the event featured a session on "Life Below Water - Harnessing The Blue Economy through Investment & Innovation".

On July 7th I moderated a World Ocean Summit Insight Hour on how business can be a key driver behind restoring the regenerative capacity of critical ecosystems. I was joined by leading scientists, conservationists and executives to discuss key solutions to restore ocean health and create both socio-economic and ecological value.

It's day three of The Economist Group's Sustainability Week US! I am moderating a panel discussion on "Protecting and fostering the natural environment" from 1.15pm EDT, with National Park Foundation's president and chief executive Will Shafroth; Nestlé's head of sustainable sourcing Emily Johannes; and Rainforest Alliance's director of global policy and coalitions Jeffrey Milder.

World Biodiversity Day is celebrated every year in late May to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. To honour this occasion the World Ocean Initiative shines a light on one of the planet’s greatest survivors: the horseshoe crab.
