This week I’ll be joining a webinar organised by the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) to speak about the blue economy and financing marine renewable energy opportunities.
⏰When?
7th May at 12:30pm BST
🎙️ Who?
I will be joined by David Luck, Chief Executive, Sustainability & Finance; Holly Niner, Global Challenge Research Fellow, University of Plymouth; and Kris Atkinson, Fixed Income Portfolio Manager, Fidelity International. The webinar is organised by IEMA, the global professional body for anyone working in environment and sustainability.
💡 Why?
As part of the global energy transition, industries that harness ocean energy offer huge potential, especially tidal and wave. Commercialisation of tidal energy has progressed rapidly in recent years, particularly in Europe. The pipeline of pre-commercial tidal farms continued to grow in 2024, while several full-scale wave devices were deployed. Technologies with strong potential in the future such as ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) and other ocean energy sources such as salinity gradient and ocean current technologies could pick up at the end of the decade, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency.
Islands and remote coastal areas, including Small Island Developing States (SIDS) or great ocean states, could provide an ideal market entry avenue given good preconditions for ocean energy deployment and the integration of variable renewables as well as a high need for energy to power other offshore markets such as aquaculture, desalination and cooling. However, ocean energy technologies still face challenges to their deployment, including lack of funding opportunities and market visibility.
