I have been appointed a trustee at the New Economics Foundation, a UK-based think tank focusing on social, economic and environmental justice.

A big talking point in the investment world is the financial resilience of companies with high ESG ratings. I am project director of a new Economist Impact study based on two global surveys—one of asset owners and one of companies—to examine how they can find common purpose in ESG.

2021 could be considered the year when climate and sustainability entered the mainstream. So what are the prospects for 2022?

I am the project director of a new assessment that has just been published—produced by Economist Impact and supported by Dow—that examines the distinguishing characteristics of a range of plastic recycling technologies.

I was invited to participate in the Sustainable Finance Leaders Dialogue in Paris on October 25th, organised by the BMW Foundation. The Dialogue addressed the question of how to strengthen the power of green finance with a more efficient and better adapted policy framework to speed up the race to net zero.

I am excited to announce the launch of Economist Impact's The Sustainability Project as a new kind of platform for engagement, analysis and debate, convening and actively engaging global stakeholders with the power to effect real change. And this real change is urgently needed.

Happy to announce the launch of a new Economist Intelligence Unit research project that I led, on how environmental, governance and social factors are shaping our future. The research is based on a survey of 450 institutional investors. It explores the ongoing shift of ESG from risk to opportunity.

It's day three of The Economist Group's Sustainability Week US! I am moderating a panel discussion on "Protecting and fostering the natural environment" from 1.15pm EDT, with National Park Foundation's president and chief executive Will Shafroth; Nestlé's head of sustainable sourcing Emily Johannes; and Rainforest Alliance's director of global policy and coalitions Jeffrey Milder.

For two years I have been the lead editor of The Economist Intelligence Unit’s food sustainability programme. As I bow out, I am reminiscing about the great impact the FSI is having on stimulating policy dialogue and progress.

In August I presented recent progress on sustainability-related projects at the Green Economics Institute 14th Annual Conference at Said Business School, University of Oxford. The conference was attended by leading academics in areas such as environmental economics, finance and sustainable development.

On July 2nd I attended The Economist Events’ inaugural Climate Risk Summit in London. Planning for climate change-related risks is now an essential task for any business.

On April 8th and 9th I attended the Cambridge Global Food Security Symposium 2019, which focused on generating practical solutions for India and Africa. I presented the Food Sustainability Index on day 2 of the conference.

Sustainable infrastructure can only be delivered when all three pillars—economic, environmental and social—are considered together. All stakeholders have to collaborate in planning, design, delivery and management.

Sustainable food systems are vital for achieving the SDGs by 2030. There are strong connections between the SDGs and the three core dimensions of food systems: economic, social and environmental.

The Food Sustainability Index won the “Best Creative Solutions Led Content Marketing Campaign" at the AOP Digital Publishing Awards, held in London on June 27th 2018. Irene Mia, global editorial director for thought leadership, and I collected the award on behalf of the team.

The Food Sustainability Index won the "Brand & Media Owner Partnership" accolade at the World Media Awards in 2018.  The judges said that “this partnership created a genuine tool, and the choice of partnership was crucial to its impact. The tool lives beyond the campaign to help improve our world.”
